John W. Havrilla served as Executive Director of Lutheran Services New York Alliance since August 1, 2015. As of 2021, he is serving as Board Administrator. He was a board member of United Lutheran Appeal for over five years and a member of the Alliance’s board for ten years.
Ordained in 1973, John was a parish pastor in the Metropolitan New York Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, retiring in August of 2014, after a combined service of 32 years in Pearl River, and nine years in West Hempstead, New York, respectively. He also served as Secretary of the Metropolitan New York Synod in the mid-1990s, was a Candidacy Committee member and served on related task forces associated with students seeking ordination and certification in the Lutheran church.
John was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wagner College in 1969, and his Master of Divinity Degree from The Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia in 1973.
Volunteer community work over 40 plus years has included the local fire department, chaplain to the Police Benevolent Association’s 9/11 Observance Committee, Hospice of Rockland Clergy Board member, Protestant Committee on Scouting, Rotary International, and member of the Pearl River Interfaith Clergy Association. Serving a parish with a pre-school of just under 400 pre-school children became an avenue of greater service to the wider Rockland, NY and north Bergen County, NJ communities.
John became most enlightened by the work of the Alliance agencies after completing a sabbatical that included visitation to member agencies, as well as other church-related service organizations. John was often heard telling others, “You will be amazed by the wonderful work being done through our Alliance members.”
While working for the Alliance part-time, as Executive Director, John continued to be struck by all the extraordinary work being done through our Lutheran presence among young, old and middle-age people with special needs. His focus for the Alliance is in development (funding), mission interpretation, and executive administrative function. In this role, John highly values membership in the Association of Lutheran Development Executives, a national association of professionals dedicated to serving through effective funding development strategies.
In addition, his educational opportunities with church related social services in the north Germany and in Italy have broadened his understanding of church related services beyond the United States. Especially significant was his participation in the Lutheran World Federation meeting in 2011 where he was part of an international team, hosted by the then North Elbian Church that included church leaders from the Africa, South America, Central and South East Asia. His experience in Italy in 2013 broadened his vision of the extensive social service to people in need by the Waldensians, part of the Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches, a denomination committed to serving the marginalized, promoting social justice and fostering inter-religious work.
